Chris Hemsworth’s Thor 5 is reportedly being developed at Marvel Studios, but with one notable name potentially missing from the project as Marvel Studios searches for a replacement: Taika Waititi.
While the first Thor movie was well-received, its sequel, Thor 2: The Dark World, was seen as a let-down. The third installment, Thor: Ragnarok, performed better and saw director Waititi put a more light-hearted spin on the character, netting him an opportunity to direct the fourth Thor film. Unfortunately, lightning wouldn’t strike twice for Waititi, and while it was by no means the worst Marvel Studios movie, Thor: Love and Thunder was still a flop, with many fans voicing concerns about whether the MCU could still salvage Thor after such a major drop-off for the character in his solo outings.
While even Hemsworth had a negative outlook on Thor 4, Marvel Studios still has plans for the character and has zeroed in on what needs to change. According to Daniel Richtman, who reliably reports on such matters, a fifth Thor film is getting in gear at the studio. However, Waititi won’t return to direct the upcoming project. According to Richtman, the studio is actively seeking a replacement for the filmmaker behind the last two Thor films, likely indicating that confidence in his more humorous take on the character backstage has shifted after the failure of Love and Thunder to make good on one adapting of the most exciting storylines from the comics in years.
While Waititi expressed conditional interest in Thor 5, it was apparent that the director wouldn’t be called back to helm the next project, as many cited his unique approach to the character as a major reason for Love and Thunder’s failure to connect with audiences, relegating the success of Ragnarok to novelty. For his part, Waikiki sees no fault in his approach and defended Love and Thunder. “Some audiences really loved the humor part of it. Some audiences really wanted it to be just like the comics,” Waititi said in an interview for a Movie Special Book. “But, you know, I always say, if you want it to be exactly like the comics, read the comic. You’ve got to change things here and there to make it a film.”
That viewpoint aside, there’s a lot of potential for another film, with Secret Invasion setting up a potential Thor 5 storyline well in the view of many. However, with three different directors already on the books (Kenneth Branagh for Thor, Alan Taylor for Thor: The Dark World, and Waititi helming the last two), there’s no doubt that the job has taken on a daunting aspect that might scare off a few potential filmmakers. With the current phase of the MCU slowly making its way back to the high-stakes territory that tends to bring heroes together, a connection to the rest of the MCU will also have to be taken into consideration when planning out the next Thor film.
One way or another, keeping Thor in the MCU is important to Marvel Studios’ plans, as a Loki producer confirmed a Loki and Thor reunion is coming eventually and is the endgame for the much beloved Disney Plus series. For now, fans must wait to see how the next Thor film plays out and what role the brothers will play in the MCU’s future.
The Thor films are currently available for streaming on Disney Plus.

The Mandalorian and The Last of Us star Pedro Pascal will team up with Thor and Extraction star Chris Hemsworth for the Heat-style crime thriller Crime 101. And the idea of the two A-listers uniting for an action outing clearly has studios in a frenzy, as reports have revealed that both Netflix and Amazon Studios are currently fighting for the rights to the project.
As per a report by Deadline, Netflix and Amazon are now doing battle for Crime 101 in a deal that the publication describes as “whopping,” with Amazon reportedly having “the edge.” While no deals are yet in place, sources have revealed that both Pascal and Hemsworth “have shown interest in the project prior to the strike.”
Alongside the duo of Pedro Pascal and Chris Hemsworth, Crime 101 has tapped American Animals director Bart Layton to helm the project. As well as the critically acclaimed heist movie American Animals, which tells the true story of the Transylvania University book heist which took place in 2004, Layton is also known for the BAFTA winning documentary The Imposter, which explores the 1997 case of a French confidence trickster Frédéric Bourdin.
Crime 101 will be based on the novella of the same name, which was released back in July 2021. Written by Don Winslow, Crime 101 has been compared to director Michael Mann’s seminal 1995 crime thriller Heat starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. Which is certainly a comparison that should spark excitement. Though it’s a very high bar to reach for…
“A string of high-level jewel heists up and down the Pacific Coast Highway has gone unsolved for years, mostly because the perpetrator has lived by a strict code he calls ‘Crime 101,’” the official synopsis for Crime 101 reads. “Police attribute the thefts to the Colombian cartels. But Detective Lou Lubesnick’s gut says it’s the work of just one man. Now the lone-wolf jewel thief is looking for that fabled final last score, and Lou breaks all the rules of ‘Crime 101.’”
While further details surrounding the adaptation are unknown, we can assume from the novella’s outline that Pedro Pascal and Chris Hemsworth are circling the two main roles, with one playing the thief while the other stars as Detective Lou Lubesnick. The smart money would bet on Pascal playing the criminal, while Hemsworth plays the cop. But really, either actor could play either role.
Over the last few years, Pedro Pascal and Chris Hemsworth have become two of the biggest names in Hollywood. The former is best known for his roles in the likes of Game of Thrones, Wonder Woman 1984, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and his emergence as a protective father figure in both The Mandalorian and The Last of Us. The actor recently joined a stellar cast for the upcoming swords-and-sandals sequel, Gladiator 2, with the actor’s name now causing instant interest as soon as it’s attached.
Chris Hemsworth meanwhile is best known for his role in the MCU as Thor, with the actor expected to star in both upcoming Avengers sequels. The Marvel actor will next be seen joining the Mad Max franchise in the prequel, Furiosa, before voicing Optimus Prime in Transformers One.

While actor Peter Cullen has been the iconic, commanding voice of Optimus Prime for nearly 40 years, a different actor is stepping into the tires of the Autobot for a new Transformers movie. Chris Hemsworth (Thor) will voice a young and, one can only assume, hunky Optimus Prime for Transformers One, a new animated movie that promises the origin story of the leaders of the Autobots and Decepticons, Paramount Animation announced Thursday.
Transformers One will also star Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) as young Megatron in a story about how the two most famous Transformers “went from brothers-in-arms to sworn enemies,” Paramount said. The story of Optimus Prime and Megatron’s youth was previously explored in comic publisher IDW’s Transformers series (pictured above), but the animated feature film will likely take its own approach to young Optimus, back when he was known as Orion Pax.
Joining Hemsworth and Henry in the animated film’s cast are Scarlett Johansson as Elita (aka Elita One, Optimus’ Autobot leader stand-in while he was away from Cybertron for a few million years); Keegan-Michael Key as Bumblebee; Jon Hamm as Sentinel Prime, the leader of the Autobots before Optimus took over; and Laurence Fishburne as Alpha Trion, one of the oldest, wisest Transformers.
Josh Cooley, the former Pixar artist and screenwriter who directed Toy Story 4, is helming Transformers One. Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari, who co-wrote Ant-Man and the Wasp and Hulu’s No Exit, penned the script.
Transformers One hits movie theaters on July 19, 2024.
